Some people will do anything to avoid crossing bridges like the William Preston Lane Jr. Memorial (Bay) Bridge, its 186-foot height and 4-mile ride causing anything from mild distress to a full-blown panic attack.

- My first response to this story when I saw the headline was there is a career down the tubes. My 11 Years of USN told me there was never a doubt he would be relieved and a Board of Inquiry will result in his retirement. Unless he is found negligent he unlikely to be subject to court martial.

- Although my phobia is not as strong as some of those in the story, I can relate to this phobia. I have a heart in my mouth sensation even over high freeway entrance ramps. Years ago I had to drive over the Deception Pass bridge in Washington State almost daily.

- I am convinced that the major changes in our children's behavior commenced with the elimination of corporal punishment in schools. Parents do not discipline and then are surprised when their children fail tp perform well in a disciplined environment, or should be.
